🤔 Moving from Texas to Sacramento, CA: Is It Worth It?

Hey guys, it’s Jake. If you’ve been living in Texas—or you’re thinking about making a move—and Sacramento is on your radar, this blog is for you.
As someone who’s lived in Sacramento for almost five decades and helped hundreds of families relocate here, I’ll walk you through what you really need to know before making the move from the Lone Star State to Northern California.
Let’s break down the pros, cons, and key differences so you can decide if Sacramento’s a fit for your lifestyle.
🌡️ 1. Let’s Talk Weather
If you're coming from Texas, you’re used to hot summers and mild winters. Sacramento has a similar feel—but less humidity.
-
Summer: Dry heat, not sticky. It hits the 90s, even low 100s, but the evenings are more comfortable.
-
Winter: Super mild. You’ll get some rain, but snow is rare unless you're up in the foothills or Tahoe.
And no tornadoes or hurricanes to worry about here.
🏡 2. Cost of Living — Is It Cheaper or More Expensive?
This one's a biggie. In general, yes—California is more expensive than Texas, especially when it comes to housing. But hear me out:
-
Sacramento is still way more affordable than San Francisco, San Jose, or even parts of Southern California.
-
You get great neighborhoods, schools, and amenities without Bay Area price tags.
-
If you're coming from cities like Austin or Dallas, the cost difference might not be as steep as you think—especially when you factor in property taxes (which are higher in Texas).
If you’re selling a home in Texas, you could be in a great position to buy something beautiful here with equity to spare.
🚗 3. Lifestyle and Things to Do
One of the biggest benefits of moving here is location. Sacramento gives you access to everything:
-
2 hours to Lake Tahoe 🏔️
-
2 hours to San Francisco 🌉
-
1.5 hours to Napa 🍷
-
Tons of hiking, biking, and day trips in between
We’ve also got awesome farmer’s markets, a thriving food and coffee scene, and great breweries. It’s an outdoorsy, family-friendly, and laid-back vibe.
🏘️ 4. The Vibe is Different—And That’s Not a Bad Thing
Texas and California have different cultures and politics—no surprise there. What I love about Sacramento is that it’s kind of a middle ground.
We’re not as fast-paced as the Bay Area, but we’re not too sleepy either. You’ll find friendly people, growing communities, and a lot of folks who’ve relocated here from other parts of the country.
So, if you’re looking for a fresh start in a city that still has room to grow—Sacramento might just be it.
